History of Block Panchayat
Tanur Block Panchayat - History
Tanur Block Panchayat, one of the 15 block panchayats in Malappuram district, is an intermediate-tier local self-government institution in Kerala's three-tier Panchayat Raj system. Formed around the historically prominent Tanur region, this block panchayat serves as a key administrative link between the Grama Panchayats and the District Panchayat.
In the medieval period, Tanur was part of the kingdom of Vettathunadu (Tanur Swaroopam) and stood as a major port center along the Malabar coast, maintaining maritime trade relations with Arab, Chinese, and European traders. During the British colonial era, this region was part of Malabar District.
Following the formation of Kerala State, local self-government institutions expanded. With the enactment of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment in 1992 and the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act in 1994, block panchayats were granted greater powers and responsibilities. Since then, Tanur Block Panchayat has played a crucial role in leading the comprehensive development of the region across key sectors, including rural development, healthcare, education, agricultural development, drinking water schemes, and social welfare initiatives.
